Dive into the inspiring career trajectories of top HR leaders with our new series, “The Career Journey of a CPO.” Hosted by Lucinda Carney, each episode features a special guest sharing their advice to guide current and aspiring HR professionals. This series is a must-listen for anyone aiming to understand the complexities of climbing the HR ladder.
Celebrating a significant milestone, the 250th episode of HR Uprising marks the launch of ‘The Career Journey of a CPO’ series with Steve Browne, Chief People Officer at LaRosa’s, as the featured guest. In this episode, Steve shares his transformative journey within HR, providing his insights into career progression and strategic impact. Reflecting on workplace challenges, Steve notes, “I think every issue is a people issue, not every situation. When somebody talks, within four to five words, they’re going to say someone’s name,”, highlighting his people-centric approach to HR and the importance of understanding the workforce deeply. Steve believes practical experience such as working alongside employees in different roles, can provide invaluable insights into the challenges they face. In this episode, Steve further discusses his style and processes to effectively support the workforce.
Lucinda is joined by Kate Hughes, the Chief People Officer at Seven Investment Management (7IM). Over the past decade, Kate has played a pivotal role in growing the company from 170 to more than 600 employees. An important aspect of her approach, especially evident in the early days at her company, is assessing and shaping the organisational culture. She reflects, “We realised that the culture we had, we needed to put more attention on that, is what were the aspects of the culture we wanted to retain?”. She highlights the key transformations during the company’s growth, stressing the importance of a strong organisational culture that aligns with employee values to foster inclusivity.
Kate also believes that decisions should align with business outcomes. This is so HR can be seen as a valuable partner in achieving organisational goals rather than just a support function, therefore understanding the business’s commercial aspects is critical for HR professionals. Kates strategy to HR is a key theme throughout the episode, as she discusses the implementation of foundational changes that support sustainable growth and a positive workplace environment.
That wraps up our January recap! We hope you’ve enjoyed this month’s discussions and guests as much as we have. Next month, we’ll continue exploring the journeys of HR leaders, bringing you more inspiring stories and insights. Stay tuned and join us as we delve deeper into the ever-evolving landscape of HR.
