AI and HR

My recent podcast with Liz Redway highlighted the fact that many HR professionals appear to feel intimidated by AI, lacking confidence about where they can use it. This is understandable as there is loads of hype out there and it is easy to feel intimidated. However, for those who do embrace it, the potential benefits, particularly in terms of productivity are pretty clear.

Here are 10 relatively straightforward places that HR professionals can engage with AI. Ai in HR

AI offers numerous opportunities to enhance HR processes, improving efficiency, accuracy, and employee experience. Some of the best uses of AI in HR include:

1. Planning and productivity

Tools like Fathom or other notetaking apps can save hours of time capturing meeting notes or actions. We’ve found the accuracy of the meeting summaries pretty impressive. Just think of the time that can give you back

2. Recruitment and Onboarding

This can be a contentious area as it has been found that AI is only as good as the data it is given – so if it is trained from your previous recruitment processes (which were unknowingly or knowingly biased) then that will be continued through the AI. However, if we use this technology with care to avoid bias it can save huge amounts of time screening CV’s, matching potential candidates, running initial screening, scheduling interviews and potentially even predicting candidate performance. Once recruited AI tools can be great for onboarding and providing new employees with the information they need.

3. Performance Management

AI can be used to help generate relevant objectives for a specific job role. Thus providing customised learning to support those objectives or a specific set of competencies. Predictive analytics using AI can be helpful identifying top performers, moderating performance ratings and fairly attributing rewards.

4. Learning and Development

AI can suggest personalised training programmes or resources based on employees’ current skill gaps, career goals, and learning preferences. You can even engage with AI as Virtual Mentors or Coaches who can provide guidance to employees on career development and skills improvement.

5. Succession Planning and Talent Mapping

Talent Mapping: AI can identify high-potential employees and map out their career trajectory within the organisation, helping HR with succession planning or helping them to avoid flight risks. In theory, AI could also be used to predict which employees are likely to succeed in leadership roles based on their performance, personality traits, and previous experiences. Like recruitment this must be used with caution as the data is only as good as the previous leaders so being alert to bias is key but if the traits measured are unrelated to race, gender or other such characteristics then it could be used to level the playing field rather than make it worse.

6. Supporting Wellbeing and preventing burnout

There are AI systems that can track employee work hours, numbers of meetings etc that could predict stress levels and risk of burnout. If employees want to combine their personal metrics such as sleep and exercise it can be a helpful way of empowering them to manage their health in a holistic way

7. Streamlining HR Operations

Used well, AI is a brilliant tool for taking over the repetitive processes whether managing payroll processes, flagging compliance risks or answering common HR related queries. By reducing the burden of these repetitive tasks it can free HR teams up to be able to focus on activities that are less predictable, that benefit from the human touch and are more strategic.

HR professionals are regularly criticised for not being strategic enough – I don’t believe this is due to lack of ability, more likely to be lack time due to all the mundane busywork that so many of us are hampered by. Used wisely, AI can demolish these tasks in a fraction of the time that it takes a human AND it allows us to spend more time on the tasks that we find personally fulfilling and engaging.
