Demonstrating the strategic value of HR

Often accusing HR of not being strategic enough is problematic. Famously introduced by Kaplan and Norton, the HR Balanced Scorecard is certainly an effective way of measuring people-related activities. It is far more valuable than measuring lagging indicators such as recruitment costs or training spend.

Financial results are just one aspect of what drives a successful business. Kaplan and Norton outlined other indicators as well as Finance, including Process Effectiveness, Customer Satisfaction & Loyalty, and the ability for the organisation to Learn and Grow. Together, these concepts make up the four quadrants of the Balanced Scorecard which presents a more balanced picture of past and future performance.

These slides give examples of what an HR or L&D balanced scorecard could look like, with example metrics that you can use within your business to measure and deliver value. Also included is an example of a ‘Strategy on a Page’. This can be used to support your own business strategy.
