Often accusing HR of not being strategic enough is problematic. Famously introduced by Kaplan and Norton, the HR Balanced Scorecard is certainly an effective way of measuring people-related activities. It is far more valuable than measuring lagging indicators such as recruitment costs or training spend.
Financial results are just one aspect of what drives a successful business. Kaplan and Norton outlined other indicators as well as Finance, including Process Effectiveness, Customer Satisfaction & Loyalty, and the ability for the organisation to Learn and Grow. Together, these concepts make up the four quadrants of the Balanced Scorecard which presents a more balanced picture of past and future performance.
These slides give examples of what an HR or L&D balanced scorecard could look like, with example metrics that you can use within your business to measure and deliver value. Also included is an example of a 'Strategy on a Page'. This can be used to support your own business strategy.
